THE POWER OF BABBLE

by Mad Adam

The Wonderful World of Words. Where would we be without words? Speechless, that's where. With words we weave a wondrous world, between the pages bound in big black books. Large libraries lovingly lodge our legacy of living language. Our vast vocabulary captured on paper for us to savor. The silent symbols inscribed on pages by aged sages can break our cages. Writing so exciting and inviting it's pleasures can't be measured. Imagination, information, incantations and inspiration all found bound in leather-back jackets. Call them communication packets. If I could only read with speed these creeds it still wouldn't quench my needs. Paragraphs in profusion creating illusion. A pronunciation playground of prodigious proportions with relentlessly restless sentences to slake our senses. Yonder, ponderous passages on pages printed for us to ponder. We find in these bindings shining remindings of fact and fiction and the way of diction, poetry and prose right before your nose. Literature long and short of length. Some is weak and some has strength. Words too come short or long. We use them right, we use them wrong. All it took was a look in a book. The heard word occurs acoustically. It's the preferred way to convey information in most situations. Occasionally euphemistically. Speakers making speeches to masses of different classes. Soap-box talks on a lark in the park. The noise of the voice. Whispers in the dark. The ravings, the rantings, the cheering, the chanting. The excellent words of oratory. The made-up medley that is a story. Lies are tried and tales are told. Teaching taught to young and old. We wield our wit within a weighty world of words of wisdom. A language longs to hear itself, not to sit shoved on a shelf.
